My name is Bonita Jones and I’m running to represent you in the Minnesota House of Representatives, District 62B.
I’m proud that my mother and father were among the first African Americans to move to and integrate South Minneapolis. I grew up here, and my children and I live in our family home that was purchased 60 years ago.
I grew up in this neighborhood and have raised my boys here. I’m invested and deeply rooted in our community. I love our neighborhood. I have 28 years experience in education as a Minneapolis Public Schools elementary classroom teacher, and most recently as an advocate with the Minneapolis teachers’ union for the past 11 years. I also currently serve on the board of the Nellie Stone Johnson Scholarship Fund.
As an African American mother with two sons, who has spent her professional life in the Minneapolis Public Schools, I know the sense of urgency that must be brought to criminal justice reform. The State of Minnesota can break the School-to-Prison-Pipeline and end Mass Incarceration. As a legislator, I will champion restorative practices and wrap around services in our schools, second-chance job and housing opportunities for those with criminal records looking for a better life, and funding for family stabilization services to keep families together after destabilizing events or ongoing crisis.
As your representative I will put my professional and personal experience to work to improve our public schools and parks, fight for working people by authoring a $15 minimum wage state law and make it easier for workers to organize unions, and achieve criminal justice reform.
I am Bonita Jones and I am asking for your vote. On February 6th at 7pm attend your precinct caucus and become a delegate to our senate district 62 DFL Convention. The DFL endorsing convention is on March 10th at Justice Page Middle School.
Our district needs an experienced advocate for justice. As a mother, teacher, and union member, I believe we must make our work for justice centered where race, gender, and class meet. In these times of resistance, Minneapolis must lead. Join my campaign.
